ImageOptim is a handy little app for Mac that helps you optimize your image files. You know how images often come with extra data called metadata? This can make the file size bigger than it needs to be, taking up more disk space and slowing down loading times. ImageOptim makes this process super easy!
The user interface of ImageOptim is pretty straightforward. You just drag and drop the image files you want to optimize into a simple window. If you're a fan of shortcuts, you can even drop them onto the ImageOptim Dock icon!
Once you've dropped in your images, ImageOptim gets to work right away. After processing, you can check out your images in a Finder window. Next to each file, you'll see its new size and how much space you've saved!
You can also customize how your images are optimized by using the Tools menu in ImageOptim. There are several tools available like Zopfli, PNGOUT, OptiPNG, AdvPNG, PNGCrush, JPEGOptim, Jpegtran, Jpegrescan, or Gifsicle.
If you're not totally happy with the results after optimizing your images, no worries! Just select the files you'd like to go back to their original state and choose "Revert to Original" from the File menu. Keep in mind that ImageOptim works on the original files directly and doesn't save processed versions for next time—so make sure you revert before closing!
You can also dive into the Preferences window of ImageOptim. Here, you can enable specific optimization tools and adjust their strength using simple sliders. Plus, there's an option to remove metadata for PNG and JPG files or manage file permissions.
