Description
Iconic is not an "iconic" app since it's not exactly popular (also because it's a very small, very new app, and very niche). Based on its name, you can quite easily tell that it's an app that's about "icons."
More to the point, it's a simple free, and open-source application that allows you to create custom icons for your folders. The way it works is as follows: it allows you to add images on top of folders.
Clearly, this is not your typical icon creator app that's all about editing icons and creating them from scratch. Other interesting aspects about this app include the fact that it's mainly made for the GNOME desktop environment (Libadwaita) and that it's fully written in Rust (which means it's fast).
At heart, Iconic is a very simple app. The GUI is quite minimalist as well, even though, you do get the various customization options. For instance, you can scale the image on the folder using a slider, you can toggle Monochrome on and off, and you can also manually adjust the image's position on the folder.
I really love projects with clear roadmaps. Clearly, a lot of work has gone into Iconic. However, according to the app's roadmap/to-do list on GitHub, there are still a lot of things that need to be done.
For instance, there's drag-and-drop support, proper error handling, the ability to export folder images to SVG, the ability to temporarily change the folder icon, and the addition of a Quick Startup Guide (or something along those lines).
Iconic is a classic example of an app designed for a specific task by a developer who just wanted to practice. Iconic is a great little app that might come in handy for users who are not looking for a classic solution to the whole icon-changing problem.
