What is Host?

Host Application

Host application is a handy command prompt utility for Windows. It’s actually based on the FreeBSD Host utility. So, what does it do? Well, it helps you find info about Internet hosts!

How Does Host Work?

The cool thing about Host is that it pulls information from a bunch of interconnected servers scattered all over the globe. By default, it simply switches between host names and Internet addresses.

Getting More Information

If you want to dig deeper, you can use the options [-d] or [-a]. These options let you fetch all sorts of details about a specific host from the domain server, like A records, MX records, NS records, and even TTL.

Using Host with Arguments

You can use either host names or numbers as arguments when you run this program. First off, it tries to see if they’re host numbers. If that doesn’t work out, no problem! It will treat them as host names instead.

Understanding Host Numbers and Names

A host number looks like an IPv4 dotted decimal quad (for example: 127.0.0.1). On the flip side, a host name is made up of names separated by dots—like www.itsamples.com.
