Description
Hashsum
Hashsum is a nifty little app for OS X that hangs out in your status bar. It lets you quickly hash any file using different encryption methods. Want to use it? Just click on the app’s icon to show or hide its panel.
Why Use Hashsum?
So, why bother with hashing? Well, calculating a file's hash helps you see if it stayed intact during transfer. But let's be real—going back and forth to tools for this can take forever, especially if you're juggling a ton of files every day.
Easy Access in Your Status Bar
This is where Hashsum shines! It puts the checksum calculator right up there in your status bar. Just pull up the panel, drag and drop the file you want to check, and voilà! The app will whip up the hash value for you.
User-Friendly Design
The Hashsum panel sticks around on top of all your windows until you click its icon again. One thing to remember: there aren’t any system-wide hotkeys, so you'll have to use your mouse whenever you want to interact with it.
Select Your Encryption Algorithm
Inside the main window of Hashsum, you can pick which encryption method you want for hashing: MD5, SHA1, or SHA256. If you've already loaded a file and switch tabs within the app, Hashsum will automatically calculate the hash value using that algorithm.
Details at Your Fingertips
The bottom part of the Hashsum panel shows you the file’s name and extension along with its full path. You’ll even see the hash value and can copy it straight to your clipboard by hitting a button!
The Bottom Line
In short, Hashsum is super helpful for checking whether your files are intact by comparing checksum values quickly. Just remember: while it calculates those values like a champ, you'll need another tool if you want to compare them!
