By adjusting the settings on your dial-up networking adapters, you can really boost your connection to the Internet. Many people don’t know this, but Windows 95 comes with some pretty basic default settings. For example, it uses a MaxMTU of 1500, RWIN of 8192, and TTL of just 32. These settings aren’t ideal for dial-up connections.

The Basics of Data Packets

So, how does all this work? Well, when you're surfing the web, all the information travels in tiny pieces called packets (or datagrams). Each TCP packet has a header that’s about 40 bytes long. This header contains important routing info along with the actual data being sent or received.

Routing Your Data

If the sender and receiver are on different networks, these packets have to go through one or more computers before reaching their final destination. And here’s an interesting fact: there’s no guarantee that two packets sent at the same time will take the same path through the Internet!
