GrandPerspective is a handy tool that scans the folders you choose and creates cool tree maps to organize your files. It groups them based on different criteria, so you can easily see what's taking up space on your Mac. Plus, the visual layout is super easy to navigate. You can either click on the files to open them in Finder or delete them right from the app.
The first thing you need to do is tell GrandPerspective which folder you want it to check out. By default, it keeps things sorted by folder, but if that's not working for you, just open up the drawer panel on the main window and change it up!
With the GrandPerspective Display panel, you're in charge! You can switch around how the files are sorted—whether it's by creation date, file type, or even last access time. There's also a selection of color palettes built into the app. While you can't create your own colors, toggling between these options keeps things fresh!
If you want more control over what shows up on your map, GrandPerspective lets you create new filters. This means you can combine different tests for items like audio files or large images. Want to hide some stuff? No problem! You can mask items from view or exclude them while scanning.
A great feature of GrandPerspective is that it allows rescanning of the same folder with different settings. You can open results in a separate window too; this way, comparing everything side-by-side becomes super easy!
You have options when it comes to saving what you've done! You can save your map representation as a TIFF image file or store scan data using a unique format that lets you pull it back up later.
During testing, we found that for a 12 GB folder with over 1600 items, the map data file was only about 500Kb! This means GrandPerspective is not only powerful but also lightweight—perfect for keeping track of folder changes without hogging disk space.
