GrandPerspective is a neat tool that helps you see what's taking up space on your computer. It scans the folders you choose and creates colorful tree maps that show how files are grouped together based on different criteria. It's super easy to navigate, and from there, you can open files in Finder or even delete them right away!
First things first, you'll need to point GrandPerspective to the folder you want to check out. By default, it keeps everything sorted by folders, but if you want a different view, just open up the drawer panel attached to the main window.
The GrandPerspective Display panel gives you options to change how files are sorted. You can pick from various criteria like creation date, file type, last access time, and more! Plus, there's a bunch of predefined color palettes for your maps. Just keep in mind that while you can switch between these palettes, creating new ones isn’t an option.
If you're looking for something more customized, GrandPerspective lets you create filters! You can refine what shows up in your map by testing different types of files like audio or images. Want to focus on large files? No problem! You can filter out items from the view or exclude certain elements during your scan.
A cool feature is that you can rescan the same folder with different settings whenever you like. This way, you can compare results in a separate window and see how things have changed over time.
You also have the option to save your map as a TIFF image file or store scan data in its own format for later use. This makes it handy if you're tracking changes in a specific folder without hogging too much disk space.
When we tested it with a 12 GB folder containing over 1600 items, we found that the map data file was only about 500Kb! So not only is GrandPerspective efficient at organizing your files but it's also light on storage!
If you're interested in exploring more tools for managing disk space, GrandPerspective is included in collections such as HDD Space Analyzers.
