Making a truly random choice is surprisingly difficult, if not impossible, but you can pretty close. Services like random.org can help you out, but a desktop application is often a lot more convenient.
You might think that it wouldn’t be too difficult to come up with a program that can pick something at random, but this goes against how computers work – everything they do is based on code, and nothing is left to chance.
To get around this limitation, developers have to introduce randomness from an external source. In the case of random.org, it comes from atmospheric noise, which is pretty much impossible to predict.
The application doesn’t need to be installed, so you can just go ahead and launch it after unpacking the archive. To insert more options, click the plus button and type their name. You can add as many as you like and remove any of them later.
When everything is ready, just click the dice button to have the program pick one of the options. All the other ones will be removed from the list, but there is no way to restore them if you want to use the same items again.
There are plenty of situations when you might need to make a random decision, and using a service like random.org is one of the fairest ways to go about it. gPicker makes this process a bit easier, allowing you to insert the options and make a selection directly from your desktop.
