Gifski is here to change the way we think about GIFs! We all know how annoying it can be to see those low-quality animated GIFs that load quickly but look terrible, right? Well, Gifski lets you create high-quality GIF animations without sacrificing quality. It’s a free app for macOS and works as an open-source GUI for the GIF encoder.
This app is based on a cool command line tool called gifski, which uses the pngquant PNG lossless compression library. This means it can turn your videos into stunning GIF animations. With features like temporal dithering, smooth gradients, and thousands of colors in each frame, Gifski makes your GIFs pop!
So how does Gifski achieve such great quality? It creates a unique color palette for each frame of your GIF and blends colors across frames. This way, your animated GIF will look almost identical to the original video with hardly any loss in quality.
While you’ll love how amazing these animations look, there’s one thing to keep in mind: the file sizes can get pretty big! Your resulting GIF could be up to 10 times larger than the video you started with because of how GIF formats work.
The Gifski GUI makes it super easy to convert videos into GIFs. You can simply drag and drop your video onto its window or dock icon. You can also choose files through the File > Open menu or right-clicking on them.
When you're ready to convert a video into a GIF, just drag and drop it into Gifski's window! Before it starts converting, you'll pick out a name for your new file, set any Finder tags if you want, and choose where to save it.
You can also adjust settings like scale, FPS (frames per second), and quality right before conversion starts. If you select lower quality settings or FPS options, this might help reduce the overall size of your final file.
During the conversion process, Gifski keeps you updated with a handy progress bar that shows how far along you are in creating your new animated masterpiece!
Even though everything ran smoothly during our tests, it's worth mentioning that Gifski doesn’t support generating multiple animated GIFs at once. This limitation might come from its command line tool not having built-in support for that feature.
All things considered, Gifski is an intuitive and straightforward option for anyone looking to turn videos into high-quality GIF animations on their Mac. It really proved its worth throughout our testing!
