gentoo is an open source, modern, small, fast, powerful, flexible, and highly configurable graphical file manager implemented in C/GTK+, despited have a name similar with the one of the powerful and well-known Gentoo Linux operating system.

The software is inspired by the classic DirectoryOpus 4 program for Amiga systems. It has been successfully tested on various UNIX-like operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Solaris, BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD).

However, it’s graphical user interface (GUI) is very similar with the one of the Worker two-pane file manager, but looks much better because it is designed in GTK+, which in turn is inspired by the old-school Midnight Commander program.

Key features include support for most common file operations, such as copy, paste, rename, move, mkdir, etc. It uses the GIO library for accessing all filesystems, includes a direct graphical configuration, a powerful file-recognition system, as well as more than 120 original pixmap icons.

Installing the gentoo application on a GNU/Linux computer has never been easier, as the program is distributed in all mainstream distributions. All you have to do is to open the integrated Software Center app (e.g. Ubuntu Software Center in Ubuntu), search for gentoo and install it with a single mouse click.

After installation, you will be able to fire up gentoo from the Accessories section of the Start Menu on your open source desktop environment. The application is independent of a desktop interface, so you will be able to use it on GNOME, Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, LXDE, Openbox, Fluxbox, and even KDE. The software is also independent of a computer platform, so you will be able to install it on 32 or 64-bit machines.
