Description
More often than not, a modern web browser is pretty much adequate for most users' needs. However, when dealing with large files, the use of a proper download manager can make life a lot easier.
Gabut Download Manager is one such "proper" download manager. It's a free and open-source, Linux-only app that allows users to download a wide range of file types.
The app includes support for torrent, Metalink, Magnetlink, and URL downloads. Another aspect that makes Gabut Download Manager appealing is its presence on multiple Linux store platforms such as Snapcraft, Flathub, and AppCenter (for ElementaryOS users), and it even has a Ubuntu Launchpad PPA.
Clearly, Gabut Download Manager is all about simplicity and user-friendliness, however, that doesn't mean that it's completely stripped down. Because the app uses Aria2c (local server service), users can perform file transfers between any Linux PC and a smartphone.
The app's GUI is decently modern, and it sticks to the thoroughly classic and established layout (found on many other download managers as well). Gabut Download Manager also has clipboard manager (which I found to be of great help), support for remote connections, and a Dbus menu.
Last but not least, the app also features a Firefox extension, which can be downloaded from the appropriate Add-on Store.
The app's should also have tray integration support, but as far as I was able to tell, it doesn't work on Ubuntu.
As mentioned before, Gabut Download Manager is not the most feature-packed app of its kind. Still, considering that it's free, open-source, and the feature list is adequate, it's worth checking out if you're looking for a reliable download manager.
