FreeScaler is a cool tool for anyone looking to upscale their images without spending a dime. Image upscaling is super easy these days, thanks to loads of free web tools and some more complex paid apps. FreeScaler is an open-source application that gives you a simple and friendly desktop interface for enhancing your images. It's great for both artwork and photos, using two powerful open-source tools called Real-ESRGAN and RealSR in the background. While it doesn't have tons of customization options, its user-friendly design makes it super easy to navigate.
Upscaling can be tricky since the app needs to figure out how to fill in all those new pixels when you boost the resolution. With its smart AI models, FreeScaler analyzes many other images, allowing it to better recognize content and accurately "color in" those newly created pixels.
This handy app has various models for different types of images—like anime, drawings, and regular photos—plus options for image sharpening. If you're working with anime images, you can choose between 2x, 3x, or 4x scaling. However, for other models, it's locked at 4x scaling only. You can also turn on test-time augmentation; this helps reduce any artifacts but will take a little longer.
To get started with upscaling your images, simply drag them into the main UI. Pick your preferred model and hit Upscale! The app lets you load multiple images at once too—super convenient! When everything's done processing, you can slide a divider to compare the original image with the upscaled one.
The fact that most models are locked at 4x may limit how useful this app is for some projects. Plus, there are no options for customizing noise reduction or sharpening features. It would be nice if you could zoom in while comparing results too so you could really see the details better.
If you're not into web-based tools that require uploading your images or paying for software, FreeScaler offers a solid solution as a free upscaler. While it could use more features and fine-tuning options, it generally does a great job!
