FontMap is a handy tool that helps you check out all your fonts, whether they're installed or just hanging out on your disk. Sometimes, figuring out what fonts you have can feel like a big task. But with FontMap, it's way easier!
When you open up FontMap, it shows you a neat alphabetical list of all your installed fonts. You'll also see previews of the characters from each font, so you can pick one that looks just right for your project.
At the bottom of the main window, there's this cool feature called the Buffer. It's a text field where you can type using the selected font to see how it looks in action. If you're feeling adventurous, just right-click on any character and it'll pop right into the Buffer!
If you want to make a character bigger for better viewing, just click and hold down the left mouse button on it. This will enlarge it to fill up the main window—pretty neat, huh?
A unique feature of FontMap is that it lets you browse through local disks for fonts that aren't yet installed on your system. This means you can test out new fonts before deciding to add them!
However, keep in mind that FontMap doesn't let you rearrange fonts based on different features like serifs or special character support. This might be a bummer for those who need diacritics or other special symbols.
This utility shows off an extended character set for any font too! To insert these symbols, though, you'll need to use their ASCII codes.
If you're looking at enlarged characters in FontMap, you'll see their ASCII code displayed at the top of the main window—super helpful! Overall, FontMap offers more features than the built-in Character Map application.
If only we could rearrange those typefaces! But still, being able to view all those extra symbols available in a font is something many users will appreciate.
If you're ready to give FontMap a try and explore its features yourself, head over and check it out!
