FontForge is a cool font editor that gives you everything you need to create and tweak your own font styles quickly. Once you're done with your project, you can export it into different formats like OpenType, TrueType, AAT, SVG, CID-Keyed, PostScript, and more!
Getting FontForge set up is super simple. You just drag the app into your Applications folder (if you don’t do this, it won’t work). But hold on! Make sure you've got X11 installed on your Mac first since FontForge runs on the X11 platform.
The first time you open FontForge, it’ll take a bit of time to scan all the fonts on your system. Don’t worry; this only happens once!
The interface has two main windows: one for managing font styles and another for editing characters. Plus, if you get stuck or want to learn more, there's a great online tutorial that explains everything really well.
FontForge comes packed with a bunch of drawing tools like bezier curves that help you whip up custom character designs in no time. You can even open any typeface and change specific symbols if that's what you're after.
If you're into coding, FontForge supports its own scripting language and also works with Python. This means you can automate repetitive tasks by integrating scripts to make things easier for yourself!
Since FontForge operates on the X11 window system, its design might feel a little old-school. Also, be ready; it takes some time to launch the app initially.
No worries though! Despite its slightly dated look, FontForge lets you preview each character in a typeface easily and customize their designs using an intuitive drawing editor.
