Filer is a super handy Finder extension for macOS that you'll love, especially if you're coming from Windows. You might miss the cool feature in Microsoft's File Explorer where you can create different types of documents right from the context menu. Well, Filer brings that feature to your Mac!
With Filer installed, you get a fresh item added to your context menu. This means you can quickly create text files, Office documents, iWork files, and even some programming-related files without any hassle. Just right-click anywhere in the file system browser, and boom! You're good to go.
If you've opened up Filer but don't see the "New File" option popping up, no worries! Just head over to System Preferences, click on Extensions, and look for Filer under Added Extensions. Make sure to check the box next to it so it shows up in your context menu.
Once you've got that set up, you'll notice a shiny new option at the bottom of your context menu. Whether you're chilling on the desktop or browsing through folders on your Mac, just select what type of document you want from the submenu and it'll be created instantly!
This app makes life easier if you need something like a .txt file. Instead of opening textEdit first, creating a new document, formatting it as plain text, and then saving it somewhere specific – with Filer, it's all done in a click!
If you're switching from Windows or juggling both systems, this is definitely a must-have tool for power users and programmers alike. It really enhances how efficiently you can work.
One little wish we have is for an option to remove certain items from that New File context menu. It can get cluttered with apps that aren't even installed on your system. Hopefully, we'll see that feature come soon!
Overall, Filer adds some serious quality-of-life improvements to Finder that both new Mac users and seasoned ones will appreciate. It's lightweight and free too! Just give it some tweaks here and there to make it fit your needs perfectly.
