Elk are also called wapiti. Elk are similar to the red deer found in Europe. This is a Native American word meaning light-colored deer. However, all male elk, American and Asian, have a high-pitched bugling call used during the rut. This call is a vocal adaptation designed to carry sound across long distances in open landscapes. On rare occasions, females bugle. Males attract females by bugling - a very loud call that can be heard over a distance.
