What is ecotube FOR LINUX?

Ecotube (or EcoTubeHQ) is a sleek and relatively new Linux video player that promises high-quality video playback for a wide range of video files, as well as for many DRM-free streaming services (all with minimal bitrates, of course).

Ecotube is a free and open-source, Linux app. At its core, it's a GTK+ frontend for MPV and, I mean, what's not to love?

MPV gives VLC a real "run for its money," and the GTK+ interface looks stylish and clean on most desktop environments, but mostly on GNOME (which I happen to use on a daily basis).

The app is also heavily based on Celluloid Player. Once again, there are no complaints here, as Celluloid is a highly configurable and generally potent video player on its own.

An aspect that's often overlooked is hardware acceleration on video players. When it's possible, the app can make full use the computer's GPU to optimize quality and keep the CPU usage to a bare minimum.

When it comes to video upscaling methods, Ecotube is rather interesting. For starters, you get AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, Lanczos, and Bicubic (energy-saving mode).

There is also a super practical AMD FSR video quality available, and it's something you can use while listening to podcasts (as it renders the video at 144p when full-screen is not required).

Other noteworthy features include the ability to play YouTube videos (via av1 codec, and vp9 when the first one is not available), the ability to restrict video resolutions to 720p/30fps to minimize data usage, and two different Opus audio bitrates (70kbps (lo) and 160kbps (hi).

There are a lot of things that should make Ecotube worthy of your attention. Indeed, it's still a very "young" app, and, indeed, it's not aimed at users who want a stripped-down experience.

Ecotube is by no means difficult to use, but its advanced features recommend it mostly for users who want that extra step of configuration when it comes to playing videos and streams.
