DiskFailure is a handy little app for your Mac that helps you keep an eye on your disks. It’s super important to check your drives every now and then for any reading or writing errors. By doing this, you can catch potential issues before your drives give up completely.
When you get DiskFailure, it puts a small icon right in your status bar. All you have to do is click on it to open the main window of the app. This makes it really easy to run diagnostics on your current device and check out results for all Macs linked to your iCloud account (just make sure iCloud is turned on).
The top part of the window shows a list of devices that DiskFailure has found along with their test results. Down below, you can see analyzed log files, monitored parameters, and any important drive events.
The first time you use the app, you'll need to give DiskFailure access to the Apple System Logs folder where all those .asl files are kept. This way, it can analyze the logs and show any alerts or errors that might pop up.
If you're connected to iCloud, DiskFailure will store all this info in the cloud. That means you'll have access to everything across all your devices!
You can refresh the analysis whenever you want, but if you leave DiskFailure running in your status bar, it will automatically check every 2 and a half minutes! The best part? It doesn’t use up much of your computer’s resources—only about 1% of CPU power and around 50 MB of RAM on a typical setup like a 2GHz Intel Core 2 iMac with 6GB RAM.
DiskFailure offers a simple and straightforward way to routinely check your disk for errors. Since it doesn’t hog resources, feel free to keep it running at all times so you can easily check back later for any possible error messages.
