Disk ARchive is a lightweight but powerful tool that works on multiple platforms. It helps you back up and archive large files into a secure, encrypted archive.
This handy tool has a cool dual-headed filter feature. It lets you backup file systems into one single file! The first head makes it easy to choose which parts of your directories you want to include in the backup or restore process. The second head focuses on which types of files to consider. Pretty neat, right?
You can create either a complete system backup or go for a differential one, depending on what you need at the moment. A full backup grabs all the files you specify in your command line. On the flip side, a differential backup only saves the files that have changed since your last reference backup.
If there are files in your reference backup that are no longer around when you do the differential backup, don’t worry! They’ll still be stored as “been removed.” When you decide to restore your differential system backup, any changed files will get updated with new ones, while those marked as “been removed” will get deleted.
Another cool feature is that Disk ARchive lets you split an archive into several parts, regardless of their size or number. This way, saving and restoring backups is super easy using CDs, DVDs, USB drives, or other removable media!
The default setting doesn’t compress your backups, but guess what? You can use gzip, bzip2, and lzo algorithms to compress data before splitting it up! Plus, Disk ARchive gives you several options for encrypting archives with algorithms like twofish, blowfish, AES256, camelia256, and serpent256.
If you want to enjoy all these awesome features and more, just download and unarchive Disk ARchive! Open a Terminal window and navigate to Disk ARchive’s folder. Then run these commands from the command line:
./configure && make && sudo make install dar
