Desktop App Converter is a handy tool for folks like software developers or programmers who want to turn their desktop applications into UWP apps. It makes the whole process easier and more efficient.
This program allows you to convert applications that were created for Win32 or .NET 4.6.1 into Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. You simply run the original installers through this utility, and it generates an AppX package for you. This package can then be easily installed using the Add-AppxPackage
PowerShell command.
The cool part? The desktop installer runs in a sandboxed Windows environment based on a fresh Windows image. While it's doing its thing, the converter captures all sorts of data from the file system and registry input/output. This information is packaged along with your output, making it super useful!
To use the Desktop App Converter, you'll need the latest version of Windows 10 Insider Preview because it's built on features from those specific builds. You'll also have to download the WIM base image file that matches your Insider Preview version.
Once you've checked off all those requirements, you need to run a command in PowerShell with Administrator rights: Set-ExecutionPolicy bypass
. After that, setting up the converter involves running this command: .DesktopAppConverter.ps1 -Setup -BaseImage .BaseImage-1XXXX.wim -Verbose
. Once everything's set up, you can access it through either Command Shell or PowerShell.
This tool is a must-have for anyone serious about app development!
