Cygwin project is a DLL which provides a Unix emulation environment for Windows. The Cygwin environment offers a complete port of development utilities such as gcc, binutils, gdb, make, and more, along with a wide range of useful utilities.

  • Linux-like environment for Windows

  • Consists of two parts: dll (cygwin1.dll) for Linux API emulation and a collection of tools for a Linux feel

  • Compatible with recent Windows versions (32-bit and 64-bit)

Important Notes:


Official support for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me will be discontinued in the next major version of Cygwin.


Cygwin is not designed to run native Linux apps on Windows. Application rebuilding from source is required for compatibility.


Cygwin does not enable native Windows apps to access UNIX functionality without source code alteration.
