Description
VPNs have plenty of use cases, whether you just want to minimize your online footprint or access content that isn’t available in your location. They’re a great tool if your aim is to stay private on the web.
CyberGhost VPN is one of the many such services you can opt for, and it definitely has its strengths, along with a fair share of weaknesses. It’s meant to be a simple VPN for Mac users, offering a vast server network and ways to get around regional restrictions, especially for streaming services.
CyberGhost VPN is very easy to get started with. You just log in, and the app can select an optimal server for you. Connections can be managed directly from the menu bar, with your favorite servers available as options.
Servers are plentiful, and they are categorized based on their ideal use case. Download servers offer the best speed, while streaming servers have the best chance of working with streaming services. You can even see which service they’re optimized for, which is a nice touch.
The app supports IKEv2 and Wireguard, but not OpenVPN. There are very few customization options, and split tunneling isn’t supported. While this was a macOS issue for some time, other services have started supporting this feature once more.
Seven connections can be used with one subscription, which isn’t too bad. Mobile and TV apps are available, but no proper browser extensions. The Chrome and Firefox addons are not tied to your subscription, offer limited locations, and do not offer the same level of privacy as the desktop app.
CyberGhost VPN seems to tick all the right boxes privacy-wise. It claims not to log any user data, publishes transparency reports, and has undergone several independent audits.
However, some personal information is required to create and manage your account, and this info can be shared with the company’s subsidiaries, which increases the risk of a data breach or data collection. Also, the fact that you are prompted to share additional diagnostic data when first launching the app isn’t a great look.
CyberGhost VPN does many things right, and it’s particularly good for unblocking content in streaming services. It’s simple to use, though it lacks advanced features. The company’s privacy practices could be improved, and the subscription price is not the cheapest, but not terrible by any means.
