ControlAir is a cool app for OS X that lets you control media on your Mac with just finger gestures. Imagine being able to skip songs or change the volume without touching anything! Sounds awesome, right?
You might be wondering how this works since Macs don’t have touch screens. Well, ControlAir uses your Mac’s iSight webcam. It can see certain finger motions and turn them into actions on your screen!
To get started, you’ll need to calibrate the app. This means tilting your Mac’s screen so that your head is in a special red circle. Don’t worry; it’s easy! Once calibrated, there’s a handy tutorial that teaches you the basics of using the gestures.
After setup, controlling your media is super simple! Just raise your finger in front of the iSight camera. You can pause or play videos, skip tracks, or even adjust the volume while using apps like iTunes, QuickTime Player, Spotify, VLC, and more!
The developers recommend being about 1 to 5 feet away from the camera. But honestly, we found it works well even if you're further back! A really fun feature is if you raise your finger to your lips quickly—a “shush” gesture—this mutes the sound. Do it again to unmute!
We have had so much fun using ControlAir! Just remember that your fingers need to stay within the detection circle shown during setup.
If we could wish for one thing from future updates, it would be a feedback option so you can see exactly where to place your finger for better detection.
The only downside is that ControlAir needs at least one supported app open to work its magic. It would be great if they added a feature that lets you launch these apps with gestures.
ControlAir really changes how we think about our Macs’ iSight cameras. Plus, it uses what you already have—no extra hardware needed! Overall, it’s one of the most exciting apps we've tested lately and shows promise for future gesture controls.
