BioLZMA is a super handy tool created by the team at Shenzhen University and Texas Instruments DSPs Laboratory. It's designed for DNA sequence compression and works across different platforms. What’s really cool about BioLZMA is that it packs more punch when it comes to compression ratios compared to popular software like Bzip2 or Gzip, and even some top DNA-specific compression tools.
This application runs smoothly on any Windows computer, and the best part? You don’t need to install anything! Even though it has a specific purpose, BioLZMA is super user-friendly. To kick things off, just load your original file (you can use formats like .fasta, .dna, or .bz) and pick where you want to save it.
If you want to dive deeper into the settings, just click the button in the lower right corner of the app's neat little interface. This will show you various options for compression along with a comparison chart that lets you see both the original size and the compressed size side by side.
In the Compression Settings area, you can choose what type of symbol you'd like for conversion—options include Amino, DNA, or even none at all. Plus, you can pick how long you want those symbols to be! And there’s more: users can select their precoding type too—either Huffman Coding or Binary coding. There are also options for LZMA compression data such as Dictionary level, fast bytes count, LZMA mode, and Match Finder type.
