What is Belle FOR LINUX?

Belle is a open-source, cross-platform and freely distributed software project that aims to deliver a user-friendly visual novel maker application for GNU/Linux users. It can also be used to create 2D games.

With Belle, you will be able to create basic or complex visual novels that contain characters, dialog, scenes, navigation, and various other elements. It boasts an easy-to-use GUI that is composed of six modules: Actions, Resources, Scenes, Characters, Properties, Pause Screen, and Action Catalog.

Each newly create project will have a name and you can set the screen size, font and text speed. It is possible to use a built-in web browser. Projects can be saved locally or easily exported to another application.

The application comprises of two different applications, an editor for creating and editing games, and an engine for running those games. It will require HTML5 for the engine.

As mentioned, this is a cross-platform software, which means that, besides running on GNU/Linux, it can be successfully used on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Supported hardware platforms include 32-bit and 64-bit.

The program is written in the C++ programming language and uses the Qt4 GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. While it’s available for download as a source archive, it officially supports the Arch Linux, Gentoo and Ubuntu Linux distributions.

If you use another Linux kernel-based operating system aside from the ones listed above, you’ll have to grab the source archive if you want to install Belle. Open an X11 terminal emulator in the directory you’ve extracted the source archive and type the “qmake belle.pro” commands to configure the project, then type “make” to compile it, and finally, type ./belle to run the application or “sudo make install” to install it system wide.
