bchunk is a free and open-source tool that helps you convert CD images in the ".bin / .cue" format (sometimes you might see ".raw / .cue") into a bunch of .iso and .cdr tracks. This can be super handy if you've got a collection of old CDs or VCDs lying around!
The bin/cue format is commonly used by some popular non-Unix CD-burning software, but unfortunately, it’s not supported by most other CD burning programs. That’s where bchunk steps in to save the day!
You’ll find that many CD/VCD images shared online come in this BIN/CUE format. So having a tool like bchunk really makes your life easier when you need to work with those files.
The cool thing about the .cdr tracks created by bchunk is that they are in the native CD audio format. You have the option to either write them directly onto a CD-R using cdrecord -audio, or you can convert them to WAV or any other sound format using sox. If you're using version 1.1.0 of bchunk or later, you'll also be able to get audio tracks outputted straight into WAV format!
