Baccus is a cool macOS application that helps you back up your files, so you don’t lose anything important if your hard drive crashes or gets hit by malware. It’s super handy for keeping everything safe!
With Baccus, you can back up any local folder on your Mac easily. The app has a neat interface similar to Spotlight, which makes it quick to find the files you need when it's time to restore them.
When you fire up Baccus, it will prompt you to add an external drive like AFP, SMB, HFS+, FAT, or ACFS. You can even use a NAS (that’s network-attached storage) as your backup destination!
Once you've set up your backup volume, head over to the Sources tab and pick the folders on your local hard drive that you want to back up. It’s super straightforward!
The Settings tab is where the magic happens! You can schedule automatic backups and decide how often they happen—anywhere from once an hour to once every few weeks.
This tab also lets you set how long to keep changed or removed files and gives detailed info about your backup volume. Super useful!
If you need a file back, just search for it using the top left search field in Baccus and click “Restore.” You’ll then choose where to save it! Just a heads-up: while restoring works great, it doesn’t show file previews directly; you'll need macOS’ Quicklook feature for that.
The app tends to restore files on your desktop instead of their original location, which might be a bit annoying. Plus, there are some bugs that need fixing; for example, it can fill up the system.log with error messages.
If Baccus could support online servers and cloud services backups, plus offer encrypted disk image backups or preset options (like Keychain or Mail files), it would be even more awesome!
All in all, if you're after an easy-to-use backup tool with automatic scheduling and NAS support, Baccus might just be what you need! Plus, it's said to be faster than macOS Time Machine.
