APT

APT stands for Advanced Package Tool, and it’s a super handy command-line application that’s used in lots of Linux distributions that work with the DEB package format. It was created by the Debian developers for the Debian GNU/Linux operating system. APT is one of the best command-line package management tools out there for Linux systems. It’s also the official package manager for Debian GNU/Linux, which has inspired many popular Linux operating systems like Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

Why Use APT?

You might think that since it’s a command-line tool, using APT could be tricky. But guess what? It actually makes things pretty easy! With APT, you can install as many DEB packages as you like, update all your applications or just a few, and even remove unwanted packages from your computer without breaking a sweat. Plus, APT is what powers some well-known graphical package managers like Synaptic Package Manager and Ubuntu Software Center. If you're on a Debian-based system, you probably already have APT installed!

How Does APT Work?

APT acts like an advanced front-end for the dpkg package manager. The project includes several command-line tools like apt-get, which helps with installing, removing, updating or upgrading packages; apt-cache, which is perfect for searching through software packages; apt-file, designed to find out which package includes certain files; and apt-add-repository, to add new PPA software repositories.

While some people prefer using Aptitude instead of APT, this tool offers unique features like complete installation ordering and multiple source capabilities that are hard to beat.
